In darkness, I am the avenger of the light. A sole torch holder, in the pitch black, endless void. While the majority of the city sleeps, I stand vigilant. Patrolling the city against the starlit skyline, I travel across the rooftops, a protector. Guardian of the masses. Savior of innocents. Those of which, who cannot stand up for themselves, the ones in need of saving, I rise up and claim the role as their defender. It is my duty, the path of everlasting enlightenment, true testament of unyielding faith and the way the lord has led me. In my heart, I know He guides my journey and steadies my aim, for this is my purpose. He has shown me that and continues to direct me on my voyage as I stay, the steadfast warrior. Ever righteous, pure and just. Tonight, will prove no different.
The rooftops, my main passages of travel, have become a sort of haven. In midst of all the destruction, wreckage and ruin, that I have come across in my adventures, during the quiet hours, they are my sanctuary. I find the silence soothing, when accompanied by the tranquility of the night. It helps me to collect my thoughts and ready myself for what's to come. If that's at all possible, considering the vast assortment of adversaries and unpredictable array of situations that I've encountered, since embarking on this quest. The lord always illuminates the path though. Mysterious in His ways, if anything remains certain, it is that He steadies the course. Regardless of the destination. I will always arrive where I'm needed. Mine is a dangerous road, one that is paved in peril and cemented in chaos. When there is a possible threat at every turn, He alone provides the footway that insures my well-being during the plight.
On this eve, a scream split the dusk, summoning me towards the source. With little haste made, I rushed from rooftop to rooftop, leaping from one to the other, till I stood at the edge of a roof, overlooking an alleyway. Below, I could see three men, all dressed in similar apparel. Brown dusters, wide-brimmed hats, chaps and boots with spurs. Cowboys. In present day New York? Now that's not exactly something you normally see lurking the alleyways. One of the cowboys held a briefcase, while the other two kept a female secure between them. This scenario had so many things wrong with it. Did Smoking Bob start a gang? What was going on here? The woman released another high pitched scream of terror and I sprung into action. Despite the strange air that surrounded the situation.
Descending down with the aid of my grappling hook, I landed directly behind the two men. Naturally, their response was to turn towards me but before they could retrieve their weapons, I tossed down a pair of smoke pellets that activated as soon as they hit the ground. Whispering an incantation that granted me sight through the smoke, I slipped between the cowboys and seized the woman, pulling her up to safety, I left her atop the roof that I had dropped down from and then returned to the men in the alley. The man with the briefcase turned sharply in my direction as a menacing grin spread across his face. Holding the briefcase in front of himself, he opened it and a bright green glow emerged. The gleam was unearthly and the longer that I gazed into it, the more dizzy and uncoordinated, I became. This caused me to stumble to the side and crash into a set of garbage cans. That's when I heard the distinct sound of a horse's hooves, echoing on the pavement.
As I did my best to steady myself, I held my hand up to shield the light from shining straight into my eyes. This aided with alleviating the harshness of the glare and seemed to obstruct the intense wave of wooziness that wanted to wash over me, but not by a whole lot. My movements were still awkward. Clumsy. It also didn't help that I was now looking at a ten foot tall, glowing green stallion. The horse stamped its foot and snorted a blast of putrid, asparagus colored mist at me as I backed up, with my hand still raised. A spell of my own design, instantly flowing from my lips. I was relieved when the mist split in two and subsided. From there, I began reciting an incantation to send this wicked beast, to hell. Where it most assuredly, belonged. However, I was thwarted in my task, when I heard a scream from the rooftop above. There was a cowboy on the roof, different from the ones on the ground, he still wore the same exact style of dress as the others. How unbelievably odd.
True was my aim, when I shot my grappling hook towards the heavens, latching it swiftly to the ledge of the roof above. In an instant, I was rising upward. During the process of my ascent, I also managed to toss a kendo stick and crack the cowboy, smack dab in the forehead. This caused him to flop backwards, while the woman was quick to pivot on her heels and stomp on his nuts. At the same time, my movements remained laced with immense caution. Mostly due to the fact that I was still a tad cloudy in my thoughts. As I approached the man, out of the clear blue, he hopped up to his feet and took off towards the ledge of the roof, opposite to where we stood. When he got to the roof's limit, he jumped but not before I threw a Bolas, targeted right at his ankles. The cord wrapped tightly around them, while the weighted balls hindered the height in his leap and brought him down onto the roof. Hard.
Behind me I heard the undeniable sound of a horse's neigh. The horse had somehow made it up to the roof. All ten feet of the cursed thing. The sight of this was madness, in its finest. Yet, I maintained my composure and held my ground, with strict and stern adherence. My eyes trained on the horse, I fought to search my thoughts for the proper spell, to no avail. The glowing stallion, scratched its hoof back, as a way to taunt me... perhaps? Without warning, it charged. Dashing across the roof, green flames blazing from its eyes, it came straight for me. At the last second, before it made impact, I leaped into the air. Landing right behind the stallion, only with a slight wobble, I turned and watched as the horse continued to run. With a snap of its neck, the stallion reached down, chomped firmly and threw the cowboy, onto its back in one single, swift motion. The horse maintained its advancement onward to the boundary of the roof, vaulting off to the next, it landed and kept going. Racing with the speed like no other horse. To make matters even more bizarre, eventually it disappeared. Poof. Vanished. Gone into thin air. My first instinct was to turn back and look down into the alleyway, in order to locate the other cowboys but they were gone.
I heard the woman speak before I returned my gaze to her. She said that she could explain everything. My patience was at its limits by this point but I turned to her, with a simple nod. Making the choice to leave my hood up and black bandana in place over my face, until I was given the answers that I required. She would not see my face until I was satisfied. Her connection to what just happened, made me keep my guard up and the fact that she knew something, gave me cause to keep it there. This world was full of many evils, sometimes the victim was really the enemy. I could not afford the risk.
